INSTRUCTIONAL

Michael's 10+ years in the classroom has provided him a deep understanding of the curricular, instructional and assessment needs of students & educators. He is committed to leveraging technology as a transformative tool that inspires creativity, connectivity, and innovation.

This is Michael Falgares

I began teaching first grade, fifth grade and special education in 2002 in Howell, NJ.  That’s where my interest in educational technology was sparked as I started integrating technology into my classroom and the curriculum.  In 2003, I began my MA in Educational Leadership program at Seton Hall University. In addition to education, I have also employed my entrepreneurial spirit as the owner and Executive Director of an Early Learning Academy in Brick, NJ, and as the Chief Experience Officer for Gamin’ Ride, an interactive entertainment franchise which I started in 2008 and sold in 2014 with over twenty-one locations across the country. It was in those leadership roles that I became equipped with extensive knowledge in technology and explored various ways to implement 21st century skills into my vision.  In 2013, I joined Freehold Township Schools as a Technology Integration Coordinator, coaching teachers and administrators to design and implement technology to enhance student learning.  Today, I am the Director of Technology for St. Rose High School, envisioning and leading the implementation of our technology plan to improve the overall school program while developing professional development that helps to better train and retain highly qualified staff members.  Michael was also the 2013, New Jersey, Man of the Year, for his efforts to support the NJ Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In 2017, Michael became involved with the NJ Foster Care Program.  In 2019, he adopted a little boy through that program and now enjoys being a father.

LATEST PROJECTS

Below you will find my past initiatives, projects, presentations, workshops and professional development trainings that I have provided to school districts, universities and other organizations.  My focus is digital leadership & learning, initiating and sustaining transformational change, educational technology, creating 21st Century teaching & learning environments, student-centered instruction, and social media strategy.

I&RS Informative Video

Informational video produced with the Child Study Team and hosted on our website as a parent resource for the I&RS process.

Action Reading Best Practices

I created curriculum portals that housed curriculum documents, links to resources and videos of best practices. This video is from our kindergarten team and Action Reading. The video player on the portal consisted of interactive elements to track who was watching, what parts they watched and a vehicle for viewers to share their questions and comments.
PARCC Staff Resource Website PARCC Staff Resource Website parcc 220x220 michael falgares Michael Falgares parcc 220x220

PARCC Staff Resource Website

Website created on Google Sites and leveraged as a resource for district staff in preparation for PARCC.

Hour of Code

The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week. I created the Week of Code, with various activities occuring all week that incorporated students, teachers, parents and members of the community.

Veteran’s Day Assembly

I co-directed this assembly celebrating Veteran's Day!

Edcite

During the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, in preparation for PARCC, our district's goal was to create next generation assessments for students and teachers to become familiar with administering and taking. I introduced the district's technology and curriculum committee to Edcite.com. This digital resource allowed educators to create interactive assessments using tech enhanced skills. Our district was used as a pilot for their school wide program. Then district wide assessments were created in Edcite and each teacher and student received their own account. Teachers were not only able to administer district assessments but they could also create their own assessments. Finally, folders were created and assessments were tagged and aligned with CCSS.

PBS Expectations Series

A feature on our school's website was PBS Expectations. Short videos that demonstrate to students our expectations of them in and around the building. The areas include, the cafeteria, bathrooms, hallways, the bus and the classroom. This video is something we all could use, the expectation of "Washing your Hands" after using the bathroom.

Wave of Exercise

"Wave of Exercise" is a national morning of exercise. This video was created and produced for the students of Applegate School to all exercise at the same time. Students watched this video live over the school's closed circuit system. The video was sent to the "Wave of Exercise" program who highlighted it on their website and used it as a best practice for schools around the country. Get your workout in while watching our, "Wave of Exercise!"

2014 Back to School Video

Using the song, "Footloose" our music teacher and I collaborated on lyrics for a Back to School video for the 2014-2015 school year. The chorus was tasked with learning the lyrics and then came into my recording booth to record the song. Finally, students from each department around the school were given parts and the shots were all recorded on video. Take a look at this high energy video that help ushered in the new school year.
Amazon Smile PTO Amazon Smile PTO Amazon 220x220 michael falgares Michael Falgares Amazon 220x220

Amazon Smile PTO

Previously, we used Walmart's School Program for school supplies. When that program faded away, I started a relationship with Amazon Smiles not only for school supplies but for purchases all year long. Now the PTO receives a percentage from the sales of teachers, parents and community members who shop on Amazon.com using Applegate's Smile.
Asset Management Asset Management asset 220x220 michael falgares Michael Falgares asset 220x220

Asset Management

Our district had no way of inventorying technology assets. Using Google Forms and Google Sheets, I developed and coded an asset management program to track technology in my building. Each asset was bardcoded, scanned, and specific details on the item were logged into a form. Then when assets were borrowed they were checked out and in using a Google Sheets Add on. Now it's easy to pull a report and know the location, condition and history of all of our technology assets.

School Supply Inventory

I was tasked each year with developing the school's supply lists. After collaborating with grade level teams we listed the supply lists on the school's website. Using Google Forms, I developed an easy way for grade level teams to communicate their supply needs and escalate the approval process through building level administration.

End of the Year – Tech Tasks

This video demonstrates my process for closing out the end of the year. Backing up is an important part of that process since we image/ghost all computers each summer. Along with a checklist, this video assisted my colleagues in completing their end of the year tasks.

NO TV PSA

Students wrote and produced a Public Service Announcement for NO TV day!

Claymation

Co-taught with our Art Educator, Gizelle Dobronski and the concept of Stop Animation/Claymation. Students worked with the art educator, developed their storyboards and then created their clay pieces. Then using Flipped Instruction students learned the process of Stop Animation. Finally, students came into my digital media lab and recorded their Claymation project. Here is a video of all the projects put together.

School Tour

As a feature for our school website, students in kindergarten produced a school tour video giving insight into the various areas around the building. I am truly proud of this video and think you will like it too!

PARCC Tutorial Videos

Developed a series of tutorial videos for PARCC Test Administrators.

EPals Bali Skype Program

Pioneered an EPals relationship with a school in Bali, Indonesia and Ms. Wilson's kindergarten class. This video was sent to the class in Bali to help start the relationship. Take a look!
Technology Purchasing & Budget Technology Purchasing & Budget budget 220x220 michael falgares Michael Falgares budget 220x220

Technology Purchasing & Budget

Developed annual technology budget for district and school purchasing orders.

Digital Learning Day

To celebrate Digital Learning Day, I developed a hashtag for all district employees to tweet at in order for their tweet to come up in a social media feed which was published on our district website and on all digital signage. The feed was recorded and this video captured all of the tweets.

GoAnimate Presidents

Kindergarten students collaborated with our fifth grade leaders to produce a GoAnimate cartoon on their knowledge of Presidents George Washington and Abreaham Lincoln.

Things we Should Say More Video

Part of the PBS School program, I produced and directed this video of, "Things We Should Say More Often!" Take a look!

Online Printer Management

Managing the district's printers became a nightmare. I pioneered the relationship with Print4 an company which provided an online console to manage all of our printers. From one dashboard I was able to see the current status of the printer, supply levels, any error codes and was able to initiate re-orders of supplies and service requests. This helped decrease the overall cost of supplies and maintenance while decreasing the amount of down time due to unreporter errors.

Michael’s Favorite Apps

We have all watched an episode of, "Oprah's Favorite Things." Since this workshop was right around the holidays, I entitled it, "Michael's Favorite Apps." Using student elves, they delivered wrapped gift boxes of the logos of the different Google Chrome Apps & Extensions covered in this exciting professional development session.

Christmas in Germany

First grade students were comparing and constrasting Holidays around the World. One teacher's sister lives in Germany so we used Google Hangouts to communicate with her and for students to see in real time elements of Christmas in Germany. Students had an opportunity to ask questions. Take a look at some of our video which captured the live experience.

Lenape Indians Interactive Game

Using HTML5, students learned basic coding elements to design an interactive game on the Lenape Indians. The game included questions which the students developed along with videos of the students relaying facts on the Lenape Indians. Take a look at the game, they did a great job!

Lenape Indians Augmented Reality

Using Augmented Reality, students recorded their voice in the first person and chose a portrait of a Lenape Indian to speak the recording. After students recorded the voice, we used an application that identified the mouth on the portrait. The application then created a space allowing the mouth to move. This project integrated technology into a Social Studies project.

Math Rap Video

Collaborated with a 3rd grade teacher who worked with her students ot develop a math rap to remember math facts. She wanted to make produce a music video of students singing their math rap. Take a look!

Week of Respect

As part of the NJ Bullying Law, the School's Counselor and I produced a "Week of Respect" video using the theme of Twitter Hashtags. Take a look and enjoy the video.

Curriculum Introduction Videos

This is only one video of many in a series to help introduce the district's grade level teams to the new ELA curriculum rollout. Curriculum committee members wrote the script and I designed the visual elements, screen recordings and directed the final package which was released on our district's curriculum portal. I also integrated tracking elements into the video player allowing district teams to pull reports and heatmaps of the number of views and parts of the video watched the most.

CRA-TV

I developed, produced and directed a live student run morning newscast. Here's a example episode and quality of the program.
Kudos Program Kudos Program kudos 220x220 michael falgares Michael Falgares kudos 220x220

Kudos Program

This Kudos Program was developed to recognize the efforts of my colleagues' integration of technology into their classrooms. The program included thank you notes, stickers, awards, buttons and more. These small tokens were left in the mailboxes of my colleagues after they were caught "trying" something new with the integration of technology.

2013 Back to School Video

Produced & Directed a video for parents on Back to School Night. The video was entitled, "Your 3 Words." Students were tasked with developing three words to represent their vision for the 2013-2014 school year. I then visited each classroom and video taped their three words "skit." Here is the final product!
